What Is Orthognathic Surgery

Orthognathic surgery, or corrective jaw surgery, can treat a wide variety of minor to major misalignment in the jaw. While orthognathic surgery can enhance physical appearance, the main purpose of orthognathic surgery is to improve functioning of the jaw and teeth. Treatment can involve surgery on the upper jaw, lower jaw or both.

How Do I Know If I Need Jaw Surgery?

Your doctor can identify whether your condition requires orthognathic surgery, but there are also a couple of indicators that signal that you may benefit from corrective jaw surgery.

  • Difficulty chewing or biting
  • Grinding or clenching
  • Abnormal closure of the mouth
  • Breathing through the mouth
  • Protruding jaw
  • Asymmetrical facial appearance
  • Sleep apnea, snoring or other issues with breathing while sleeping
  • TMJ (jaw joint) pain
  • Receding chin

Injuries and birth defects may also benefit corrective jaw surgery. If you experience any of the above symptoms, consult with your orthodontist and oral surgeon to determine if you are a candidate for orthognathic surgery.

How Long Is The Recovery Time For Corrective Jaw Surgery

Depending on your current condition and custom treatment plan, the recovery time for corrective jaw surgery can vary. Following the surgery, the jaw will be wired or banded to allow from stable and healthy healing of the bone. During this time, you will need to be on a specified, high protein, liquid diet. Post-procedure jaw immobility ranges from 3 weeks to 3 months. Lower jaw surgery, generally, requires less recovery time than upper or double jaw surgery. Regardless of the specific procedure, orthognathic surgery is a long-term commitment, and it is important to discuss the estimated treatment timeline with your doctor before opting for treatment.
