Ekim Orthodontics works with patients of all ages on tackling common orthodontic problems to achieve beautiful and healthy smiles. Orthodontist, Dr. Suzan Ekim, stays up to date with the latest advancements in orthodontic technology to be able to provide her patients with the best treatments like Invisalign and more. Our patients’ straight smiles do not only come from undergoing orthodontic treatment. Long lasting straight smiles are maintained after braces treatment has ended with retention treatment. Learn more about retention through retainers below.

About Retention Treatment

The retention phase is one of the most important phases of orthodontic treatment and occurs after you are through with your braces treatment. It is very important to go right into the retention phase once you’re braces have been taken off to ensure that you avoid your teeth from shifting out of place and keep the new smile you worked to hard to achieve. This phase of orthodontic treatment will typically last for a minimum of six months. Depending on your specific case, you may need to wear your retainer for longer. During the retention phase, a retainer helps your teeth to stabilize into their new positions, securing your that smile you’ve worked so hard to achieve. The retainer should be worn all day with the exception of cleaning it, brushing and flossing or eating.

Types Of Retainers

There are a few types of retainers that are available. Your unique needs will determine which type is best fitted for your smile success. Types of retainers include:

  • Hawley Retainer – this removable retainer is made up of a customized acrylic arch with metal wires anchored to it to hold your teeth in their new positions
  • Essix Retainer – another removable retainer that is made of clear plastic material that fits, vacuum tight, over your teeth
  • Bonded Retainer – this fixed retainer is bonded directly to the inside surface of your teeth and is the best way to keep your lower teeth from moving back into place

Retainer Care

Removable retainers are easy to take care of. When eating, remove it and place it in your retainer container to avoid losing it or breaking it. Cleaning your retainer is important to maintain good oral health. To clean your retainer,

  1. Use a toothbrush to brush your retainer with soap (toothpaste can scratch the material)
  2. Rinse in cold water (hot water can warp the shape)

A retainer cleanser or denture cleaner can also be used to clean your retainer if you do not want to clean your retainer with soap. You can ask Dr. Ekim which retainer or denture cleaner is best for your specific case.

With bonded retainers, you want to make sure that you keep the areas around the wire clean and remember to always floss. Contact us immediately if the bonding material breaks to avoid having your teeth shift back out of place. Do not try to fix the situation yourself.
